"After two decades in this profession, I deeply understand what is needed and how resource-limited our systems can be. COVID “virtually” catapulted us into a world of possibilty, connection, and expertise. NowICANRead is partnering with experts from all over the world, and we are realizing that we are stronger together."

Michal Gendron Ricca, M.Ed.

Michal, Owner and Founder of NowICANRead and your ReaDEFY Learning Founding Practitioner, has seen profound growth throughout her 20+ years of one-on-one instruction, but strongly felt there were missing links to fortified growth. She’s worked within the public education system enough to witness the effects that the stigma around dyslexia can have, but also the gifts it offers when guided correctly.

Michal believes that every child has the fundamental right and the potential to read and write well. Being a parent of a child with dyslexia and being engulfed in the professional world of literacy for the last 20 years has led her to create NowICANRead’s programs, and she could not love what she does more! Michal lives with her husband Brian, their two sons, and their two dogs in beautiful Williston, VT.

Mastery, not memorization.

Our English language has two components: phonetic words, which can be sounded out, and non-phonetic words, which are considered sight words and must be memorized through multi-sensory techniques. NICR teaches phonetic concepts each week in a sequential, relevant manner.  Once concepts are taught, students will apply them in words, sentences, and stories.  Every week, students will then review, teach new concepts, discover, apply, and assess for mastery.  Mastery, NOT memorization is always NICR's goal.

Research states that the effectiveness of quality literacy instruction has less to do with the program used, and more to do with the efficacy of the teacher and the intensiveness of the student’s engagement. The art of teaching can in fact, not be taught. Instead, NICR practitioners possess a natural gift that has been fostered by continuous study, best practice, education, and pure love of learning.

Over the past two decades, NICR has taught over 1,000 students how to read well without the need for repeat instruction.
